Many people lead busy, stressful lives and it may be hard for some of us to shift gears and live the lifestyle of a cat. Others will find it to be an easy task. The main goal of Like Like A Cat Day is simple: You can do anything, including nothing.
We are frequently amazed by our cat Bobo’s indifference and boredom when we are under stress, or the amount of energy she has when we are trying to take a nap. The point is Bobo doesn’t care what we think. Live Like A Cat Day is a day for you to do exactly what you want.
If you want to stay in bed all day and have pizzas delivered every hour on the hour do it. If you want to lay in a hammock all day long, do it. We all need a good lesson in learning to relax. We hope Live Like A Cat Day can help facilitate that goal.
We beta tested Live Like a Cat Day and thought we would share some of our advice so you can maximize the experience. Here are some tips in no particular order:
1. - The most important thing to remember is that Live Like a Cat Day is YOUR day. If you want to sleep all day, then sleep. If the phone rings and you don’t want to answer it, then don’t. You can even ignore your wife or husband if they try to tell you to do something. THINK and LIVE like a cat.
2 - Stock up on supplies before the big day. The last thing you want to do is have to get in your car and drive somewhere to get snacks, booze or whatever you might need. Go to the store and get what you might need so you can maximize your cat day experience. Of course, if you want to go out on cat day you can. It’s just nice to have the option to stay in the whole day if you want to.
3 - Have food delivered to you. On this day, pamper yourself with some food delivered to your door. Call your favorite pizza place or other restaurant that delivers food. Lounge around, sleep or watch TV while some poor sap brings your food to you.
4 - Watch pay per view movies. Normally it is a rip off to order a pay per view movie, but splurge a little bit today and order one if you’re in the mood for a movie. You could also rent some movies in advance if you go out for snacks and stuff the day before.
5 - Sleep in. Turn off the alarm clock and sleep in. Don’t get up until you feel like it.
6 - Play video games. If you love playing video games but feel guilty for playing them or get the evil eye when you do, relax… on Live Like a Cat Day you can play video games all day long if you like.
7 - Read a book. Take time to read that book you’ve been wanting to read.
8 - Spend time on your favorite hobby. Do you like to knit? Build boats in glass bottles? Collect baseball cards? Veg out and listen to music? I suggest you spend some time on enjoying your favorite hobby or whatever you like to do for fun.
9 - Take a bath and groom yourself. When was the last time you took a nice, warm, relaxing bath? Showers are for busy people. Do you have nose or ear hairs that need grooming? Cats spend plenty of time grooming and perhaps you should spend some time catching up in this area if you’ve been slacking lately.
10 - Do nothing. Don’t try too hard on Live Like a Cat Day. This is a no-brainer holiday. You can make it as easy or complicated as you wish. When in doubt, do nothing.
11 - Don’t do anything you don’t want to do. This is important. If a cat doesn’t want to be petted, they will let you know by biting you. If a cat doesn’t come to you when you call their name, they won’t. If they don’t like the food you feed them, they won’t eat it. Do you see a pattern here? If you don’t want to do something, don’t do it!
12 - Sit down and stare out of the window. Find a chair or perhaps a blanket and pillows and go to window with a nice view and space out. Empty your mind and think about nothing. Watch the birds or whatever is outside your window. Zone out as if you have just had a lobotomy.
13 - Get nutty and REALLY live like a cat. If you want to go the extra mile consider batting some toys around on the floor or chasing the light from a laser pointer. Lay down on the floor in a random location in your house. Take a nap in the bathtub. If you live with someone, annoy them until they bring you a snack. Try sitting on top of your refrigerator. Get creative and explore what it is like to be a cat.
14 - Party! Live Like a Cat Day is the perfect excuse to invite people over so you can lounge around, do nothing or have some fun. If you’ve spent a good chunk of the day doing nothing and are ready for some interaction, consider having one or more friends over for cocktails, a movie, games or whatever.

Most cats, except for lions and big gangs of feral cats, prefer to fend for themselves and are loners. That means that it is okay that you never made any friends. It also means that you like to protect your territory. If someone tries to steal one of your snacks or sits in your chair there is no need to ask them to step outside, just smack them.
Cats are capable of great speed over short distances–remember the Cheetah is the fastest animal on Earth. But, many a cat prefers to nap than go for a jog.
The Egyptians were reportedly the first group of people to wrestle cats into domestication, about 2000 years ago. Here kitty, kitty. The Egyptians worshipped their cats and would even shave their eyebrows off as a symbol of their grief after the passing of a family pet. If you shave of your eyebrows we will send you one dollar US!
Cats
walk on their toes, since their toes have soft padding which reduces
the sound when stalking. Your best bet for quiet stalking is a nice
thick pair of kitty slippers.
Cats have retractable claws–except the Cheetah. Use your claws at your own discretion. Remember to retract them when scratching your face, blowing your nose, giving a high five, doing anything in the bathroom, and playing with balloons.
Cats have evolved with a wide variety of fur colors and patterns. For some cats this helps with camouflage. The snow leopard has a white coat–while you might consider wearing your brown sweat pants to blend in with your couch.
During the Middle Ages the cat was associated with witchcraft and evil, and many kitties were roasted alive and burned at the stake. Hey that isn’t very nice ancestors. The dumb humans quickly realized that without cats rodents carrying the bubonic plague were biting all the babies. All the cats were quickly forgiven and given an extra bowl of Friskies.
Traders, explorers, and maybe even pirates, brought the domesticated cat to America as early as the 1600s. The cat quickly took its rightful place on the back of setees, fainting couches, and bean bag chairs throughout the country.

Q: What is Live Like a Cat Day?
A: In a nutshell, Live Like a Cat Day is a brand new holiday which grants you the right to do whatever you want all day long. You can sleep, eat, eat & sleep, play, stare out the window, lay in the bathtub, play video games or do whatever you want without answering to anyone. It is YOUR day to endulge in YOURSELF!
Q: When is Live Like a Cat Day?
A: For the first year, Live Like a Cat Day will fall on January 12, 2008. We think it will basically fall on the second Saturday in January every year.
Q: What do I do on Live Like a Cat Day?
A: Anything you want. Sleep all day, play, watch TV, read a book, play video games, whatever. Cat owners know that cats pretty much do as they please 24/7. If you are a cat owner you will know exactly what to do. There are no rules with what you can do but it is suggested that overall you do things that are relaxing, selfish, self indulging and all about YOU and nobody else. For tips and other advice, see the How to Live Like a Cat section.
Q: Why is Live Like a Cat Day on the second Saturday in January?
A: First, we wanted to pick a date in the dead of winter when you are likely to be stuck in your house and not distracted by beautiful weather. We decided the LLACD should fall on a Saturday so Monday-Friday/9-5 workers could enjoy the holiday. If we picked an exact date (such as January 12th) this eventually wouldn’t work as it would eventually fall on a work day and many wouldn’t get to take full advantage of this glorious day.
Q: What if I have to work on Live Like a Cat Day?
A: If you have to work on the day Live Like a Cat Day is on, you are hereby granted a license to pick a day that works best for you to celebrate. Of course, you could try to celebrate at work - but I suppose you could get fired.
Q: I LOVE your idea! How can I help spread the word?

When was the last time you spent the entire day in bed sleeping? Or watching TV? Was it when you were sick and HAD to stay in bed all day? Do you wish you could lounge around all day without being sick and without feeling guilty?
Look no further - Live Like a Cat Day is here to save the day!
Live Like a Cat Day is a brand new holiday inspired by Bobo, our cat (at the top of this site next to the sombrero). Over the summer of 2007, my wife Kerri and I prepared for our wedding, balanced day to day life, work and various stresses. We found it interesting that regardless of the current stress levels, Bobo always found time to relax, sleep and be completely oblivious to whatever was going on the world around her. We envied Bobo.
One day I thought “wouldn’t it be nice if you could spend a day living like a cat?”. Kerri & I discussed it for awhile and thought it would be perfect to turn it into a holiday similar to Talk Like a Pirate Day. And just like that, Live Like a Cat Day was born.
There’s enough stress in the world and your daily life… celebrate Live Like a Cat Day and give yourself a license to do whatever you please!
